Not many have yet discovered the fabulous Filabres Mountains. There is no where in the Almería province that has the spectacular beauty combined with the intimacy of forested valleys as you find on La Sierra de Los Filabres.

The mountains are dominated in the west by the space observatory high on Calar Alto, and in the east by the sanctuary of La Virgen de la Cabeza on the peak named El Cerro de Monteagudo, where pilgrims climb to the top to pray at the sanctuary. The sanctuary is built on the site of an ancient Moorish shrine. There are ruined Moorish castles and villages the Arabic influence can also be found the names of villages; the 'beni' in Benizalón and Benitagla, means 'son of' and so remain the names of ancient families.
